Sgt. (Ret.) John Rivera, the President of the Florida State Police Benevolent Association, and the Miami-Dade Police Benevolent Association Chapter President for the past 25 years, has just informed the White House that he remains an “unwavering supporter” of President Trump, however, that he was declining the “honor of a lifetime in being appointed by President Trump to be the Federal Marshall for the Southern District of Florida”.
He wrote in part that he had declined the appointment “… to better serve the President and Republican Party as the Congressman for the 27th District of Florida”. The seat is being vacated by long-time Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen.
Sgt. Rivera indicated that he would “unconditionally support any of the fine law enforcement heroes the President will undoubtedly select to fill the Federal Marshall’s position.”
Sgt. Rivera, who had the honor to have nominated President Donald J. Trump for the endorsement of the National Association of Police Organizations (NAPO) at the association’s July 2016 national convention in Palm Beach, has announced that he has authorized the formation of an exploratory committee in furtherance of his candidacy. The group has been organized by over two dozen former and current Miami-Dade County Commissioners, City Councilmen, serving and former State Senators and Representatives, civic and community leaders, as well as key Washington, D.C. based senior members of the Trump 2016 campaign team.
Rivera had reportedly also been under consideration to serve as Assistant Secretary of State for International Narcotics and Legal Affairs (“INL”), but withdrew his name after a threatened filibuster from Democratic Senator Bill Nelson, a vocal opponent of local Law Enforcement and community policing due to “racial profiling abuses in many communities.”
