"Greater even than the Seventh Umbral Calamity"

Marking the end of producer Naoki Yoshida's tenure with the award-winning MMO, Square-Enix announced Wednesday that Final Fantasy XIV's servers will be shutting down for an extended period of time at the end of the "Shadowbringers" expansion to implement a massive graphical and gameplay engine overhaul. And the timing couldn't be more perfect, as it will coincide with Sony's Playstation 5 launch as well as the game's fifth (and as of yet unnamed) expansion. The development team has previously announced that "Shadowbringers" will be the end of the Ascian saga, so it only makes sense to close out the era and begin anew with a bang. While the news of Yoshi-P's departure as well as another interruption of service is certainly disappointing to many hardcore fans, this won't be the first time Final Fantasy XIV (FFXIV) has shut down.

After the title's famously botched launch, the decision was made to shut its servers down and rebuild the game from the ground up. While controversial at the time, the improvements ultimately saved the franchise and the "Reborn" version of the game (dubbed 2.0) received overwhelming praise. Square-Enix is hoping to repeat history with a new engine and new producer for its 6.0 story arc. It remains unclear, however, if the game will receive another fresh starting point like in "A Realm Reborn" or if players will have the ability to play through the previous expansions. It was also not specified if Square-Enix intends to still support the game on PS4. Whichever the case, Vincynt Eversnow hopes you have a happy April Fool's and thank you for reading!
