Mayor Bill De Blasio suggest that the MTA creates "genderless" icons to use rather than using stereotypical male and female icons, which are being used today. He claimed this was "highly offensive" because of the way the icons were portrayed externally. Meaning the female icon was shown to have a dress on. De Blasio says that he will continue to make these gender neutral changes to the city, to provide a gendernetrual society.
