TORONTO (AP) ─ As many families prepare for a unique Halloween during the unprecedented times, costumes are a tradition that appear to have stayed this year.

However, many are not aware of the rules surrounding certain symbols on costumes, specifically the Red Cross symbol. The Red Cross is popular on medical styles of costumes, such as Doctors or paramedics, but a little known fact is that that having such symbols on children's costumes is a violation of the Geneva Convention.

Usage of the Red Cross or Red Crystal is limited under the Geneva Convention's Protocol II to protective or indicative usage for military or humanitarian personnel. It is also stated that:

"Misuse of these emblems is prohibited by international law. Misuse may diminish their protective value and undermine the effectiveness of humanitarian workers. Use of one of the emblems to protect combatants and military equipment with the intent of misleading an adversary is perfidy and is considered a war crime"

So next time your child says they want to dress up as a doctor for Halloween, you may want to consider other option.
