An El Paso Community College student has died of COVID-19, making it the latest fatal victim El Paso, health officials announced Wednesday.

The 19-year-old sophomore, who was studying journalism, died Tuesday after two weeks of being tested positive for the virus, said Dr. Erik Wilke, of the El Paso Health Authority.

The student, whose name was not released, had visited New Mexico and Arizona during the summer vacation, family members said.

"When he came back to El Paso, he did not show any immediate symptoms. He continued his normal life," John Lopez, an uncle of the student, said. "But he wanted to get tested and, well, the results were positive."

Lopez said that his nephew went to the gym and continued visiting bars in the East side before finding out he was infected. He even had gone to the EPCC Valle Verde campus to meet with financial aid and other school officials.

The student did not have underlying health issues as in many COVID-19 fatal cases, Wilke said.

"We are carefully studying this case," he said. "We are concerned that coronavirus is mutating and affecting more and more youngsters."

EPCC President William Serata lamented the death of the student.

"We are sadden by this," Serata said. "We hope not to lose another student."

He said that the Valle Verde campus will be closed until the fall of 2021 as a preventive measure. All classes will continue online until further notice, he said.
