Mojang's hugely successful sandbox video game, Minecraft, will be shutting down in late 2020, according to game developer Markus Persson. "Minecraft has been available to play for nearly ten years now," Persson stated in an interview with Polygon last month. "The number of people who play the game is decreasing daily, and it is just too expensive to keep updating the game every month. Especially since other video games that are more recent are becoming more popular, such as the release of Respawn Entertainment's Apex Legends in early 2019. Yes, I am very sad in that the game will no longer be available to play; but since late 2017, most notably after Epic Games released Fortnite, the number of Minecraft players has dropped by millions, and we [Mojang] have decided that it is just too costly to keep supporting the game." Persson also mentioned in the interview that two more updates are still planned to be released, as well as a live event to commemorate its immensely successful ten years as an online game.
