Symptoms of COVID-19

As we continually learn more about coronavirus and COVID-19, it can help to reacquaint yourself with some basic information. For example, understanding how the virus spreads reinforces the importance of social distancing and other health-promoting behaviors. Knowing how long the virus survives on surfaces can guide how you clean your home and handle deliveries. And reviewing the common symptoms of COVID-19 can help you know if it's time to self-isolate.

Some people infected with the virus have no symptoms. When the virus does cause symptoms, common ones include dry cough, fatigue, low-grade fever, body aches, nasal congestion, and sore throat. However, COVID-19 can occasionally cause more severe symptoms like high fever, severe cough, and shortness of breath, which often indicates pneumonia.

Despite the basic symptoms, there has been increasing evidence suggesting that dysgeusia, the medical term for an impaired sense of taste and anosmia, an impaired sense of smell, are symptoms of COVID-19. This is not surprising, because viral infections are a leading cause of loss of sense of smell and taste, and COVID-19 is caused by a virus. Still, loss of smell and taste might help doctors identify people who do not have other symptoms, but who might be infected with the COVID-19 virus — and who might be unwittingly infecting others.

A statement written by a group of ear, nose and throat specialists (otolaryngologists) in the United Kingdom reported that in Germany, two out of three confirmed COVID-19 cases had dysgeusia, with people giving reports that their food and drinks tasted increasingly saltier. In South Korea, 30 of people with mild symptoms who tested positive for COVID-19 reported anosmia and dysgeusia as their main symptom.

It is important to report that dysgeusia for those who have tested positive for COVID-19, is typically characterized by unpleasant taste sensations ranging from metallic to salty or bitter.
Thus, we urge the public, if anyone is experiencing the basic symptoms in conjunction with anosmia and dysgeusia, to contact your doctor.
