After the declaration that Fiat-Chrysler Automobiles was discontinuing the Dodge Grand Caravan, Toyota, a Japanese car company, immediately pulled the trigger and offered to buy the Dodge brand from Fiat-Chrysler for a total of $15 billion USD. Fiat-Chrysler agreed to the offer stating that they were going to fully incorporate the Dodge brand into Chrysler as it was by 2034. This article will answer a few key questions that Dodge customers have been asking

What does this mean for Dodge customers? Well, it means multiple things, for example, Toyota has been known for bulletproof reliability, with rare exceptions, which means that Dodge's history of weak automatic transmissions may come to an abrupt halt next year. Also, Toyota has promised to improve many other components in Dodge vehicles as well.

Is Toyota going to be discontinuing any models after the acquisition goes into affect? No, in fact, Toyota is even going to put the Dodge Grand Caravan back into assembly potentially as soon as November of 2020. Akio Toyoda, the CEO of Toyota, had this to say about the Dodge Grand Caravan's return to the assembly line:

"The Dodge Grand Caravan was truly the first of the modern minivans. The Grand Caravan was a true innovation for the transportation of families and efficient hauling of materials over long distances. We at Toyota are going to experiment with implementing some of the features in the Toyota Sienna into the Dodge Grand Caravan while maintaining the more basic, and affordable feel of the van. We are looking to implement All-Wheel-Drive as an optional feature by 2021."

Will Toyota also acquire the plant where the Dodge Grand Caravan was being produced? The answer seems to be yes, as Toyota already has 3 plants in Canada and would be delighted to acquire another as the quality control in their Canadian plants is almost on par with their factories in Japan. The Windsor, Ontario plant will likely be fully focused on producing Dodge vehicles, not just the Caravan, but also popular vehicles, like the Dodge Ram, in the future.

With this acquisition, Toyota is also looking to expand their influence and attempt to fill the reliability gap that has been dug by American car companies. Will it work? We will see in about 10 years when the long term lifespan of a vehicle can truly be tested.
