Tom Morello at The Boston Globe: "There is no reason to credit Trump"

One of the emblematic figures of 90s rock music has been tireless ever since. After years of experience in various musical projects, such as Rage Against the Machine and Audioslave, Tom Morello last year reunited with some of his former journey companions to create his new set, the Prophets of Rage. Passing through a unique presentation in Bosto, Tom showed that he still maintains the same critical and acidic sense when addressing issues of common interest in interviews with the Boston Globe.

Tom, it is a pleasure to receive you. To begin with, who participated in the idea of ??meeting old road buddies?

It's great to talk to you. Well, we are all musicians with a thirst for composition and creation. He always keeps in touch and in one of the meetings the idea came up spontaneously and here we are.


And a good musical relationship between them remains intact. What is your creative inspiration?

Well, you know what I like to deal with in music. Always try to use my role as a guitarist, my role as a musician, to establish dialogues, to talk to those who listen. I always try to insert some debate on issues that deal with our lives, our neighbors, our family members, in short, ordinary citizens. Make it essential to talk about politics for general development itself. I see it as important as entertaining as people. It is gratifying to say some points you want to say, even though some people do not agree with my positions. The most important thing is to make what was mentioned by me the same to hit. That said, since Trump was last year, there was no shortage of reasons to compose and discuss.


You really have been a tremendous critic of the current government. What are your respectful considerations?

What about Trump? What about a man who considers it reasonable to treat people of an inferior sex? Who despises those who are not in the same network as him? It is sad how many still believe in demagogies as if they were true names for evolutionary dictates. There is no reason to credit Trump, he is never a foreigner, he has always been a direct beneficiary of all chaotic politics and he has always been employed in America, he does not want the general good, but his own good. He is a man who brings together the main clichés of the governing identity: he is selfish, proud, self-centered and governmental, motivated only by personal desires.


Do you think that some controversial issues raised by him during a campaign can now be realized in the government?

Hope not. It is difficult to know who is capable. Create what is the best time for everyone to ask members of Congress, the Judiciary and the International Community for measures that rationalize or debate the public again. The history of the wall, of Mexicans, paid for by him is absurd and unreasonable for humanitarian causes. I installed the International Community just because Trump is a movement, it is a trend. There is a Trump in Poland, there is a Trump in Hungary, Germany, Ukraine, there are Trumps present in Latin American elites ... the fact that the world has been facing things that some call democratic democracy, with the advent of new extreme right populist leaders. And that is what matters most. We must stop this movement and be more attentive than ever. Otherwise, contempt for human life and human dignity will remain even more frequent.


And regarding the Trump project for America, what do you have to say?

There will be no structural change that changes our perspective. Instead. The current government is against everyone's health, against everyone's education, against everyone's retirement. New world crisis and cases of reintegration in America. I saw people having a hard time recovering their civilian life. People who had to choose between paying a mortgage or maintaining their children's education. I saw an increase in homeless people in the country. What is more alarming because we are a reference. Right now, there are refugees and stateless persons in the world who aim to die in America. Therefore, there is a correlation between the internal and external scenarios. The point is, whether Native Americans are currently experiencing such needs, or what should refugees arriving in America who have difficulty finding as human beings have to do? From unrestricted and dignified access to civil registration bodies and notaries, reducing bureaucracy to decent housing or the right to education. We are talking about the same thing: human dignity. For both Americans, stateless persons and refugees. We must move towards all facets of this concept. The bodies involved as well. Unrestrictedly. Donald doesn't think so. It's sad. I take care of that in my artistic creations, in addition to entertaining.


And speaking of artistic creations, do you already intend to trace bigger directions in this new stage?

Well, we're having fun too. We will release an album in September, we will intensify our tour. After that, time is the one who will tell us. And the events, we don't know what the absurdities will be from the government, but we will be there to fight.


You've been to Harvard, haven't you? How was the experience?

Very interesting, very enriching. Not because it's Harvard, but because of the opportunities I had. I love the academic environment, I love the study routine. Developing my research was very rewarding and challenging. But I left with a critical eye that I still maintain. You see, we are in the midst of a resurgence of strange ideas that destroyed us and the academy simply cannot impose itself on that. Lies are being disseminated, the most absurd, those that compromise science, biological or social. It's time for academics to move.


Do you think rock has lost its ability to question the status quo?

No, rock is still combative like rap. The point is that there is no more talk of politics and
society in the music since Bush left the presidency. We manifested against the invasion in Iraq and against the way the American government at the time dealt with the consequences of September 7. Since then we have lost the habit a little but we are already reheating.


It has been speculated about a possible meeting of Audioslave for new presentations or even a new record. What do you have to say?
As I said, we are friends and we keep in touch. I am a personal friend of Chris (Cornell) and whenever we can we meet again. Maybe we will play together again but for now we are just keeping in touch.
