The time has come. Greg Abbott, the Texas State Legislature, Congress, and Donald Trump have all agreed on a resolution to allow Texas to secede from the union.

What does this mean? It means that Texas, at 12:00 on December 30th, will become independent from the US and will have full control over it's own laws, taxes, economy, finances, customs & immigration, and have the ability to draft up a new constitution.

What are the ramifications for both sides? All Texans will keep their US citizenship as per section 5 of the agreement. This means all Texas wishing to move back to the US can do so. Texas is a tax donor state. This means that it pays more in taxes than it gets back in federal funding and benefits. This means that Texans will have extra money at the end of the day.

For the US however, this will hurt their economy drastically. Texas holds 9.17 of America's total GDP and also holds about 7.7 of its population. This loss of GDP and population will significantly hurt the economic potential of the US in the short term, but it may help the US progress in the long run for a few reasons.

Texas has had a love-hate relationship with D.C. after it joined in 1845. Many Texans sometimes feel more loyal to their state than the federal government. Texans seceded and joined the CSA in the 1860's, and also often petitioned the US Government to let them secede. Texas would off and on have movements to secede from the US. The Texas Nationalist Movement is often seen as one of the few movements that competed in size to the Yes California Movement.

However, do not panic. Texas and D.C. have promised to work out many comprehensive immigration, customs, and trade agreements to progress each other for centuries to come. Texas and the US will not become enemies in the near future.
