As informed to the press, Valve's CEO Gabe Newell died in a tragic accident as he was travelling to give an interview in New York City to the game-specialized magazine IGN. It was reported that the police made an investigation to gain access.
Generally the police will make a judgement based on the information provided to them as to what investigation will be carried out. A police investigation will involve the police speaking to you about the incident.
If the crime is serious or sensitive, then a detective may be appointed to investigate.
