The next time you're craving the fried rice from your favorite Chinese restaurant or try and make a creamy risotto, you might be shocked when they don't have any; Earth is officially going to be out of the crop by 2024. Reports say that massive new farming initiatives worldwide, aimed at reducing world hunger, have depleted stores of the grain; the governor of South Carolina, Henry McMaster, recently announced a new initiative to plant around 1 million hectares of rice to boost farming in the region, while the Assembly of the Union, the legislature of Myanmar, has recently passed bipartisan acts allotting almost 20 million hectares of land for rice cultivation. Similar initiatives to increase rice cultivation have been sponsored in developing nations such as Kenya, Nigeria, and Vietnam. The fervor has especially grown in India, where Lalji Tandon, the governor of Madhya Pradesh, India's largest state, wants to quadruple rice production by 2024; India, notably, already cultivates an amount of land only slightly smaller than Iraq for growing rice. What effect is this going to have on rice?
