A Georgia man was arrested for wearing too much cologne around a baby after the child became overwhelmed by the scent and fell ill.

Donte Sexton, 24, was charged with child abuse after police busted him at an Augusta Walmart buying more cologne to drown himself in after he was reported having suspicious behavior to the authorities.

“I just want to smell good for the ladies,” Sexton allegedly told responding officers, according to his arrest affidavit obtained by WTVC.

Cops said Sexton’s breath smelled like cologne and there were several empty cologne bottles in his pocket. The empty bottles belonged to Sexton and it appeared he had brought them with him and did not steal from Walmart.

At one point, Sexton pleaded with arresting officers to allow him to dab a little cologne on his wrist before the handcuffs were put on him. He insisted the handcuffs will “kill his smell.”

The baby that became sick as a result of the strong smell of cologne is not known to have any allergies and it’s not clear what if any, Sexton’s relationship is to the baby.

Sexton was being held at the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office on $100,000 bond. In addition to the child abuse charge, he was slapped with resisting arrest and disorderly conduct charges. Authorities had to wear a mask when riding in the police car with Sexton because his cologne was too strong.

He’s due in court November 4. The child is back home and doing well, according to the arrest report.
